Milton Eckerd opened his first cut-rate drug store in Erie, Pennsylvania. He laid the foundation for the successful drug store chain by buying supplies in bulk and passing the discount price onto the customer. The drug store continued to thrive as Eckerd adapted to changes in the marketplace, whether it was staying open seven days a week to provide needed prescription drugs to customers or expanding into new states to grow the business.
